Floya: 1 year in service of Brussels’ first MaaS platform

Brussels' all-in-one fully integrated journey planning solution - Floya, celebrates its first anniversary in September 2024.

Last year, Trafi (technology supplier), STIB-MIVB (public transport operator), and the Brussels Region launched Brussels' first MaaS platform, uniquely centralizing various transport options into a reliable find-plan-book-pay mobility solution.

One year later, Floya has proven to be an essential tool for simplifying daily commutes and making travel easier.

The beginnings

The app was delivered as a part of the Brussels Regional Mobility Plan to decrease personal vehicle usage and improve air quality in the capital region. Following Brussels's objective to become carbon neutral by 2050, the Floya app is a trustworthy help in achieving this ambitious goal.

The multimodal journey planning platform has 10 fully integrated mobility service providers (MSPs), including recent additions - Bolt scooters and Bancontact, aimed at enhancing the payment experience, while Trafi and STIB-MIVB teams are actively collaborating to introduce more integrations and functionalities in the future.

Impact

By equipping citizens with a state-of-the-art journey planning solution that allows users to seamlessly find, plan, book, and pay for their trips in a single platform, Floya is revolutionizing urban travel for Brussels residents, and 1,5 m route searches planned in just one year of service prove this point (source: STIB-MIVB).

During its first year, the Floya app has been awarded 3 times:

Recently, the MaaS platform has also entered the Solar Impulse Foundation’s list of “1000+ solutions to change the world”.

Floya’s uniqueness was recognized in the industry podcast BABLE Smart in the City; where Thomas de Bassompierre, STIB-MIVB program manager, and Damian Bown, Trafi CEO dive into Brussels’ urban mobility challenges of unifying transport modes into one platform.

Key factors

The success of Floya lies not only in the hard work and dedication of both the Trafi and STIB-MIVB teams but also in support from the Brussels Government by creating a favorable environment for the app to flourish - through the regional mobility plan.

STIB’s marketing campaigns have played a vital role in raising awareness, increasing Floya’s visibility by 50%.

Trafi’s dedication to creating a truly innovative product and ensuring its success.

Full alignment and active communication have been essential in driving progress from a product perspective, laying a solid foundation for the more enhanced yet user-friendly mobility platform, Floya. This groundwork will support the introduction of game-changing features like mobility budgets, gift cards, and vouchers in the future.
